Large Format Film around Capitol Reef
A short day trip to do some photography in the Capitol Reef area. Not headed to any major sights in the park, just looking to find some of the random beauty that can be found from the side of the road. And I have a lot of large format film to burn through so it's an excuse for me to zen while shooting Large Format 4x5 film.

A to Z of Utah's National Parks. Doing all 5 parks in one day, Arches to Zion.
Переглядів 1,8 тис.6 місяців тому
Seeing all 5 National Parks in a single day; Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion. Due to the way scheduling worked out my girlfriend got us cheap hotel rooms 2 days in Moab, and 2 days in Virgin Utah. So in one day we would have to venture from one side of the state to the other. I know many people roundtripping through the state have done it, but I always recommend people...
Reviewing the Reactive Outdoor 3 Second Tent in the San Rafael Desert
Переглядів 22 тис.Рік тому
Looking for a weekend getaway I had a chance to escape to the San Rafael Desert to review the Reactive Outdoor 3 Second Tent-a beginner-friendly option for new campers. This tent boasts a unique feature: quick setup in just three seconds. While it didn't meet my personal needs, I recognize its appeal to those who prefer a hassle-free camping experience. I'll discuss the tent's construction, dur...
Switching over to Swags
Переглядів 207 тис.Рік тому
Watching some other youtubers crisscrossing Austrailia I saw them using a sleeping system we don't have in the USA? What is a swag and why would anybody want to be in one? After seeing how versitile it was for them I wanted to see if it would fill the need that my Roof Top Tent wasn't able to give me. Now I think I have a new favorite tent for camping on my own. So why on earth aren't more peop...
Taking Ophir Pass to Cross the San Juan Mountains
Переглядів 9 тис.Рік тому
Ophir Pass is a moderate offroad trail between the west side of the San Juan Mountains and the scenic Million Dollar Highway. Due to the rugged terrain it's not much faster than driving around the omuntain but it's certainly a scenic drive you can't experience from pavement. All of these mountain mining roads are narrow and clinging to the side of the mountain or cliff. It's not your typical di...

Hidden Native American Sites in Zion NP
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
No the video is fine, it's not a glitch. I'm not revealing the locations of these places in Zion. They're not really hard to find but also Native American Archeological Sites don't need any help being found. These are just a smattering of the thousands archeologists have documented in the park. The real message of the video is to go slow, and look at the park around you rather than hurrying to ...
Zion National Park's HooDoo City
Переглядів 3,4 тис.2 роки тому
Long time no see! We recently took a trip to Zion at the beginning of the busy season. And rather than fight the crowds that literally shut down the main canyon before dawn we had plans to explore the equally impressive areas in other parts of the park. One of the most underrated is the Kolob Terrace Road. A gorgeous drive on it's own with lots of little places to explore, but searching online ...
Trying not to chicken out at Chicken Corners (and the wind tunnels)

A day trip to Chicken Corners and the Wind Tunnels west of Moab. An easy trail by Moab Jeep trail standards. But still some great views and some interesting places to explore. Buckhorn Draw: The North Entrance to the San Rafael Swell

Talk about a big payoff for very little work. Driving down Buckhorn Draw has to be one of the most accessible beautiful places that nobody outside the local area knows about. While I would still like to plan a big trip exploring the backroads of the San Rafael Swell from the North End to the south end, in the meantime it's really easy to just go sample the area on the very well maintained and e...
Roof Top Tents aren't all they're cracked up to be

More popular than ever but the truth is that Roof Top Tents are kind of a bad idea when it comes to camping for 99.99% of us. This video is my laundry list of issues with RTTs in general, not just this particular brand and model. That being said if you watch my recent short video you can get a feeling for my recent anger toward my particular RTT as well. If you can measure a tents difficulty se...

I always thought why would someone want rooftop tents, I don’t use a tent because I don’t have time to pack it. When I get up at 4 am go to a beautiful lake and don’t have time to come back to campground to pack up my tent I just sleep in my truck,

I had it for 5 years 😂 .It takes few minutes to take down, if you leave it it can be stolen. You don't have to level it. I've no idea why people go camping in poor weather. It's noisy in the wind, what tent isn't. Noisy Mice😂 don't get into ground tents. Gas ⛽ milage, your in America pickup with gas a fraction of European prices. Good point about the roof weight capacity but loaded weight needs to be considered. So 👍 good post in all but less chance of a Rattlesnake or Grisly popping in for a visit 😂.

The bigger a cooler the longer it will hold ice (all else being equal)… There isn’t much out there that size that will do 3-4 days at that capacity.

sorry to disagree but swags were good in the old days before modern tec but not so much anymore , i spent yrs travelling around australia working and found the best swag was just a flat non tent one which used normally just over night in good weather or put over the top of old beds in the quarters supplied but for normal use modern tec wins out .. ie a 2/3 man dome tent and sleeping bag with a sleeping mat for the wouses ... tent swags like yours are good for dew and light rain but not to be stuck in for days due to wet weather .. bit hard to cook in , let alone sit up now and then , also the tent style swag take longer to dry the night air / dew off when your packing up unlike the flatter swag or nylon tent ... plus swags of any sort take up a lot of room not to mention weight in comparison to a nylon tent and modern sleeping bags BUT they do have a certain cool value .. in oz if u have a 4x4 ute with a couple of swags in the back people think your real bushies .. prev comment about leaving your shoes out is very true .. if you do you drive a couple of sticks in the ground and put your boots on top of them

This is a very cool drive. Yet another of those "close-in to where all the people are but far away from where all the people go" trips one can take in the area. I just spent a week there this May (my first trip to the area since 1966!) and was blown away by the incredible scenery. I was also amazed by the fact that just about every main road has little roads heading off into the wilderness that provide fantastic views and lead to places that are far less crowded than the general tourist sights. I'm going to have to schedule many trips to even begin to comprehend the beauty of it all. And can I just add that I love the "Guy with big belly leaning on the rocks" comment about that one formation. 😃 It's a perfect description. It reminds me of the "Old man dragging a heavy sack" that I saw in Valley of the Gods or the "Fossilized Star Destroyer" that I saw near the Hite Overlook on State Route 95. The things we see are in our minds, of course, and the dramatic structures all over southern Utah open windows to our imaginations. I just loved that about my trip. Thank you once again for your detailed reviews. They are helping me plan my return this year likely in late October or early November, to catch a different weather perspective on the place.

Great video! I drove out here last year by myself in a rental jeep, got all the way to the last clearing and “chickened” out going down the last short path along the cliff to chicken corners cause I realized I had already burned thru almost my entire half case of water, and started feeling uneasy overheated and uneasy about being so far back myself. Still kicking myself for not finishing that last little bit 🤦🏻‍♂️. Amazing views tho!

Great video. You said it in the beginning, your gut feeling told you the Roof Top Tent was a bad idea. Long time backpacker, car camper here, I had the same gut feeling. Neighbor across the street has one on top of their Jeep. It sits on top all year, winter snow, summer rain, outdoors on the roof, and I wonder what it smells like. Happy trails!

I love Capitol Reef. Camped there September 1994, picked apples in the orchard, visited the little School house with the stove in the middle of the one room, fascinating. I also hiked to, and climbed to the top of the tallest of the Navaho Knobs at the end of the trail. No-one else around all day. A hummingbird settled in front of my camera whilst taking a shot. Took me completely by surprise, missed the golden shot. Happy days.

I know the Aussies love their swags but 30 years of overlanding I just don't get it. The packed size of most swags gets to 45x17 or bigger. If I'm gonna take up precious space in my rig with something that big I dang well better be able to stand up in it. stow most of my gear in it etc. I think part of it may be that AUS get's very little rain. I think the average nationally is less than 15 inches or something like that. Versus here where we can get 15 inches in a week in some places in the PNW and NE and so we like to be able to hole up in a more sizable tent where we can stand up, keep gear nearby and put in a chair and small table to play some cards or whatever if necessary.
